Tangential Stiffness of Elastic Materials with Systems of Growing or Closing Cracks

چکیده
Although much has been learned about the elastic properties of solids with cracks, virtually all the work has been confined to the case when the cracks are stationary, that is, neither grow nor shorten during loading. In that case, the elastic moduli obtained are the secant moduli. The paper deals with the practically much more important but more difficult case of tangential moduli for incremental deformations of the material during which the cracks grow while remaining critical, or shorten. Several families of cracks of either uniform or random orientation, characterized by the crack density tensor, are considered. To simplify the solution, the condition of crack criticality, i.e. the equality of the energy release rate to the energy dissipation rate based on the fracture energy of the material, is imposed only globally for all the cracks in each family, rather than individually for each crack. Sayers and Kachanov's approximation of the elastic potential as a tensor polynomial that is quadratic in the macroscopic stress tensor and linear in the crack density tensor, with coefficients that are general nonlinear functions of the first invariant of the crack density tensor, is used. The values of these coefficients can be obtained by one of the well-known schemes for elastic moduli of composite materials, among which the differential scheme is found to give more realistic results for post-peak strain softening of the material than the self-consistent scheme. For a prescribed strain tensor increment, a system of N + 6 linear equations for the increments of the stress tensor and of the crack size for each of N crack families is derived. Iterations of each loading step are needed to determine whether the cracks in each family grow, shorten, or remain stationary. The computational results are qualitatively in good agreement with the stress-strain curves observed in the testing of concrete. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

Effect of Rotation and Stiffness on Surface Wave Propagation in a Elastic Layer Lying Over a Generalized Thermodiffusive Elastic Half-Space with Imperfect Boundary
The present investigation is to study the surface waves propagation with imperfect boundary between an isotropic elastic layer of finite thickness and a homogenous isotropic thermodiffusive elastic half- space with rotation in the context of Green-Lindsay (G-L model) theory. The secular equation for surface waves in compact form is derived after developing the mathematical model. The phase velo...
متن کاملOn the crack propagation modeling of hydraulic fracturing by a hybridized displacement discontinuity/boundary collocation method
Numerical methods such as boundary element and finite element methods are widely used for the stress analysis in solid mechanics. This study presents boundary element method based on the displacement discontinuity formulation to solve general problems of interaction between hydraulic fracturing and discontinuities. The crack tip element and a higher order boundary displacement collocation techn...
متن کاملNumerical Formulation on Crack Closing Effect In Buckling Analysis of Edge-Cracked Columns
In this paper, buckling of simply supported column with an edge crack is investigated numerically and analytically. Four different scenarios of damage severities are applied to a column, open crack assumption and the effect of closing crack in stability of the column which depends on position and size of cracks, are numerically compared. Crack surfaces contact is modeled with GAP element using ...
متن کاملMoving Three Collinear Griffith Cracks at Orthotropic Interface
This work deals with the interaction of P-waves between a moving central crack and a pair of outer cracks situated at the interface of an orthotropic layer and an elastic half-space. Initially, we considered a two-dimensional elastic wave equation in orthotropic medium. The Fourier transform has been applied to convert the basic problem to solve the set of four integral equations. These set of ...
متن کاملBoundary Layer Effect on Behavior of Discrete Models
The paper studies systems of rigid bodies with randomly generated geometry interconnected by normal and tangential bonds. The stiffness of these bonds determines the macroscopic elastic modulus while the macroscopic Poisson's ratio of the system is determined solely by the normal/tangential stiffness ratio. Discrete models with no directional bias have the same probability of element orientatio...
